Call for pornography to be harder to access in hotels

A Wanganui father is calling for pornography to be made harder to access in motels and hotels after his young son accidentally viewed some.

Gavin Ander says his eight-year-old accessed graphic pornographic material on a television in his room during a recent stay at a Wellington hotel.

Mr Ander says he complained to the hotel about how readily available the explicit content was, but was told guests had to ask for it to be disabled, which is the industry norm.

He says he was distraught by the incident, and access to pornography shouldn't be by default.

But Motel Association chief executive Michael Baines says it's the first complaint he has heard about availability of pornographic content in hotel rooms.
