NZ Tamil community seeks cricket boycott

12:14 pm on 14 June 2009

The Tamil community in New Zealand is urging the Black Caps cricket team to boycott their tour of Sri Lanka.

Members say the team must take a moral stance against the plight of an estimated 300,000 people displaced as a result of civil war there.

The United Nations has recently backed calls for an investigation into allegations of human rights abuses at Tamil refugee camps.

A spokesperson for the Tamil Youth Organisation Dhaya Haran says a cricket boycott would send a clear message to the Sri Lankan government.

He says he has written to members of parliament and the Black Caps suggesting the boycott.
