Detox waiting list lengthens

7:07 am on 23 June 2009

The waiting list at an Auckland detox programme is getting longer as some people who have lost their jobs turn to drink and drugs.

The City Mission says people are struggling to cope with the recession - with many of those seeking help middle-class and self-employed.

Detox programme head Irene Rama says there's been a big increase in the number of people using the service over the past three to four months.

She says they are people who've never sought help before, who own their own homes and have families.

Ms Rama says many are suffering alcohol addiction brought on by losing their jobs. Cheap substances such as homebake heroin are making a comeback.
