Man warned over telephone call to mayor

8:56 pm on 23 June 2009

Police investigating a threat to the Mayor of Wellington's personal security have warned a man over the misuse of a telephone.

Mayor Kerry Prendergast has been under 24-hour private protection following what police describe as a disturbing call made last Friday.

Police say the threat was physical, but would not elaborate.

Wellington area commander Inspector Pete Cowan says officers have listened to a recording of the call and have spoken with the man.

The man told police the call was not intended to be perceived as threatening and he was upset at the chain of events he caused.

Mr Cowan says police accept the man's explanation.

Ms Prendergast says she looks forward to receiving an apology letter from him.
