Full time personal security for Mayors not seen as necessary

Some Mayors say they do not see a general need for full time personal security, despite a disturbing phone call made to Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast.

Police have warned the man behind the phonecall to Ms Prendergast, which prompted her to install 24 hour personal protection.

But other mayors say such incidents are few and far between, and there is no need to change the way they go about their normal lives.

The Mayors of Waitomo District and Wanganui were both victims of minor attacks in their communities recently.

Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws says in his 20 years of political experience, he has found that people who say they intend to cause harm, very rarely do.
