Parliament has passed a law which means it's now an offence to drive while under the influence of drugs.
The legislation allows police to carry out a roadside 'impairment' test and a blood test can be taken if the driver fails.
The penalties will be the same as for drunk driving, which can carry a maximum fine of up to $6000 or a year in prison.
The Government has indicated that sedatives are currently excluded, but may be brought under the scope of the legislation after futher advice has been sought.
