Marina at Tairua gets green light

10:47 am on 29 June 2009

A marina at Tairua on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula has granted resource consent.

The marina at Paku Bay, a scaled down version of a proposal rejected by the Environment Court in 2005, will have have 95 berths and cover an area of just over two hectares.

Commissioners hearing the resource consent application decided that any adverse environmental effects were not sufficient to justify declining the proposal.

Measures to mitigate any concerns include realigning a stream and building a bird roost.

A final decision on whether the marina will proceed is now up to the Minister of Conservation.
