Auditor-General reviews progress over police conduct

6:13 pm on 30 June 2009

Auditor-General Kevin Brady says police are committed but must keep doing more to implement the findings of a Commission of Inquiry into police conduct.

The inquiry was sparked by allegations from Louise Nicholas that she was raped by officers in Rotorua in the 1980s.

In 2007, the commission criticised the past sexual conduct of some officers, citing 141 complaints where enough evidence existed to lay criminal charges or take disciplinary action.

The commission made 60 recommendations for change.

At the request of the Government, Mr Brady is reviewing the police response.

In the first of his reviews, Mr Brady has described police efforts so far as "comprehensive" and "committed".

However, he says several matters need attention if progress is to be maintained. These include increasing the numbers who attend training courses on the Code of Conduct and ethical policing.

Mr Brady says police now need to quickly begin implementing the commission's findings.
