No inquest into Bain deaths, says Chief Coroner

4:04 pm on 1 July 2009

The Chief Coroner says there is currently no open inquest into the deaths of the Bain family, following the acquittal of David Bain.

Mr Bain was acquitted in May of the 1994 murders of his parents Robin and Margaret, and his siblings Arawa, Laniet and Stephen, after a three-month retrial.

Chief Coroner Judge Neil Maclean says there has been considerable media speculation about whether a further coronial investigation might take place.

However, he says the inquest that was opened by the Dunedin Coroner came to an end, and there is no open inquest into the deaths.

Judge Maclean says any further coronial investigation can only be undertaken following an order made by the Solicitor-General or by the High Court.
