No word from NZ rowing crew in Indian Ocean

5:31 pm on 1 July 2009

Organisers of a rowing race across the Indian Ocean have sent a support boat to try to find a New Zealand crew which has not been heard from since Saturday.

The four-man team is taking part in a rowing race from Western Australia to Mauritius.

They had been reporting their position every 12 hours, until four days ago.

Race officials believe the crew's satellite phone has run out of batteries.

Mauritius duty officer Tony Humphries says no fears are held for the crew's safety because they have not set off their locator beacons.

He says they will probably reach Mauritius by next week.
