No alternative system to counter volatile dollar - Key

2:47 pm on 2 July 2009

Prime Minister John Key says there is little that can be done to insulate exporters against the fluctuating New Zealand dollar.

Mr Key told the annual conference of Federated Farmers in Auckland that three reviews of this country's monetary system have found no room for major improvement.

Farmers and other exporting are hurting because of the volatility of the dollar, especially its current strength against the United States currency.

Mr Key was asked whether some form of managed exchange rate might work, but rejected the idea.

He said the Government has a range of policies and initiatives which he expected would help the primary sector thrive and be more productive.
