A TranzAlpine train driver has been flown to Greymouth hospital after injuring his leg at Otira Station, near Arthur's Pass.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 11.30am on Friday and say the man has moderate injuries.

KiwiRail says a rescue helicopter was called because of the man's remote location but it will not comment on how the incident occurred.

There were 229 passengers on the TranzAlpine service from Christchurch to Greymouth when the incident occured, but no one was harmed.

The service was delayed for about an hour.

The driver is likely to be released from hospital on Friday evening.
