Researchers investigate toheroa deaths

Scientists are trying to work out what has killed hundreds of endangered shellfish at a Southland beach.

Environment Southland senior resource planner Dallas Bradley says scientists are working on several possible causes for the shellfish deaths at Orepuki Beach, about 20 minutes from Riverton.

Theories range from a lack of food, a biotoxin or weather patterns including offshore easterly winds and a series of frosts.

Mr Bradley says there have been similar problems with shellfish dying at other Southland beaches in the past.
