About 300 Kaumatua are travelling to Wellington this week to showcase a bygone era.

Groups from Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa and Taranaki have been practicing for a Kaumatua kapa haka festival at Te Papa on Saturday marking Matariki.

Producer Mere Boynton told Waatea News that many of the elders have chosen composers from their different rohe to take the audience on a journey back in time.

Specific composers from previous eras had been selected.

She said the Kaumatua kapa haka will be webcast live online to give whanau around the world a chance to see their kaumatua perform.
