NZ rowing team finishes Indian Ocean race

9:17 pm on 9 July 2009

A four-man team from New Zealand rowing across the Indian Ocean has crossed the finish line in Mauritus.

Race organisers believe the team may have come second.

The rowers, all Britons living in New Zealand, had lost contact with their support team for several days and endured difficult conditions. They re-established contact last week.

The team was taking part in the inaugural Indian Ocean Rowing Race, which started in Western Australia in April.

Race duty officer Tony Humphries says a crowd of family and friends is in Mauritius to celebrate with them.

Race organisers will have to wait for all teams to finish and inspect their boats before confirming the placings.
