Police in Jamaica say they have no suspects in their search for the man who shot and killed a New Zealander in Kingston.

Tiki Hunia, 27, died on Tuesday night (local time) defending his wife, Nickie-Jean.

Mr Hunia's mother, Gloria Hunia, says a gunman grabbed her daughter-in-law's mobile phone and she instinctively tried to wrestle it back.

She told Morning Report the man hit her on the head with the butt of the gun and Mr Hunia grabbed him. Mrs Hunia ran inside for help and then shots were heard.

Family members are travelling to be with Mrs Hunia in Jamaica.

The couple were on a second honeymoon after renewing their marriage vows in Las Vegas.

Police in Kingston say no arrests have been made.

More than 1600 people were killed in Jamaica last year.
