New proposal for tackling illegal downloads to be revealed

The Government is this week expected to outline its proposal for a new version of a law that would crack down on the illegal downloading of films and music on the Internet.

Those who opposed the first version of this legislation, a clause known as Section 92A, are worried that a penalty of terminating internet accounts does not appear to be off the table.

Commerce Minister Simon Power says disconnecting internet accounts of those who repeatedly infringe copyright is an option under the proposal, but the Government will also consider using mediation and imposing fines.

Mr Power says he wants to avoid any ambiguity in the legislation and to ensure both copyright owners and internet users have certainty.

He expects the proposed new law, an amendment to the Copyright Act, to be ready for introduction to Parliament in late September or early October.
