Youth worker's sentence reduced on appeal

The Court of Appeal has reduced the seven-year sentence given to a youth worker who abused a young woman in his care.

Ralph Brunie was jailed in November 2008 after being found guilty of two charges of sexual connection with a 15-year-old he met while working at a Child Youth and Family home. Brunie was also convicted of grooming the girl for sex.

The girl was living at the home because she was deemed to be in need of care and protection, having earlier been involved with an older man who introduced her to drugs and sexual behaviour.

On Wednesday, the Court of Appeal found the sentencing judge's starting point of eight years and six months was too high.

It has set a starting point of seven years, which, with the reduction applied by the sentencing judge, leaves a final jail term of six years.
