Internet child porn filter set to launch

5:10 pm on 17 July 2009

The Department of Internal Affairs is preparing to launch a filter system to block access to child pornography on the internet.

The Swedish-made system is funded by $150,000 in this year's Budget.

People trying to access any one of more than 7000 child pornography sites will see a message saying it's blocked.

The department says the system will be voluntary for internet providers, and there is no intention of filtering material other than child pornography; nor will the system be used for law enforcement.

Deputy director Keith Manch says a code of practice will be made public, but the department will not issue the names of the websites listed.

However, an internet blogger says savvy users will be able to get past the system. IT worker Thomas Beagle also says there's no oversight and no way of checking what's being banned.
