Best pie contest begins

10:28 am on 24 July 2009

The annual quest for the best pie in New Zealand is on.

Judging began on Thursday for the Bakels Supreme Pie Awards, with about 4000 pastries vying for top pie.

Some 388 bakeries are entered this year, up from 280 last year.

Organisers say the cold weather and an equally chilly economic climate has prompted the surge.

Ten years ago Asian bakeries made up 5% of the entries, now they comprise 60%.

Pies are judged on pastry quality, contents of the filling, taste and appearance.

Results will be announced on Tuesday.
