Investigations into fatal patrol car incident

8:56 am on 27 July 2009

Three separate investigations are underway into the death of a teenage boy for Kaeo who was hit by a police patrol car on State Highway 1 in Northland.

Rawire Wilson, 16, and another teenager were struck by the vehicle at about 11.40pm on Saturday in Ohaeawai, a small rural settlement near Kaikohe.

The other boy is in a stable condition at Whangarei Hospital.

Police say there was no street lighting, and the fact both boys were wearing dark clothing probably contributed.

The Police, the Independent Police Conduct Authority and the Coroner are all investigating.

People in Laeo are shocked by the death.

Annette Stewart, who taught him at Whangaroa College last year says he was always smiling, was never afraid to speak his mind and would do anything to provide happiness to others.

Rugby coach Steve Rush says he enjoyed pighunting, fishing and the outdoors.

Assistant pastor Roger Foster says he wanted to join the army.
