Aftershocks from large quake continue in Fiordland

2:34 pm on 28 July 2009

Aftershocks continue to rock Fiordland almost two weeks after a quake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the region.

A tremor measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck just after 6am on Tuesday, centred near Dusky Sound.

Warrick Smith of GNS Science says thousands of aftershocks have been recorded since the big quake on 15 July.

Most have been too small to have been felt, but more than 20 aftershocks measuring 5 or more on the Richter scale have been recorded.

GNS Science has installed six specialised measuring stations since the earthquake and results from these will be analysed in about two weeks.
