Some of New Zealand's top athletes have had Sport and Recreation grants boosted by up to $20,000.
Multi-year grants have also been introduced so athletes having a lighter competition year to recharge will still be eligible.
Sport and Recreation performance enhancement grants for world champions in an Olympic discipline have risen from $40,000 to $60,000, while Olympic medallists will get $55,000 - up from $35,000.
Sport and Recreation spokesperson Marty Toomey says the aim is to try to hold athletes over several Olympic cycles.
Mr Toomey says the increases are from within the current budget.
