Gang patch law won't work, Hells Angel tells Laws

10:15 pm on 31 July 2009

A member of the Hells Angels motorcycle group has told Wanganui mayor Michael Laws that the city's gang patch ban is crazy and won't work.

The president of the club's Wanganui chapter, Wayne Tweeddale, appeared before a Wanganui District Council subcommittee on the gang patch law on Friday.

The Prohibition of Gang Insignia Act enables the council to ban gang patches in public places. A bylaw is set to come into force on 1 September to give effect to the law in the city.

Five members of the chapter were expected to appear to discuss the group's submission on the bylaw but only Mr Tweeddale showed.

Mr Laws repeatedly asked him to answer questions from the subcommittee, but he refused, saying he wanted only to read from a statement.

In the statement Mr Tweeddale said he was aware of two recent confrontations but did not feel that they could be blamed on gang insignia. On finishing his statement he left the meeting.
