Growing use of te reo Maori - reports

9:52 pm on 1 August 2009

A series of new reports show the use of te reo Maori is growing.

The reports, by the Ministry of Maori Development, show te reo being used more widely in Maori communities.

But Maori Party MP Te Ururoa Flavell says it's important not to become complacent about the state of the Maori language, as it's still in danger of dying out.

He says Maori need to take responsibility for keeping te reo alive, as does the Government.

Mr Flavell says te reo classes should be more accessible for people who want to improve their language skills.
