9:40 pm on 2 August 2009

A man rescued from the scene of an avalanche at Coronet Peak skifield near Queenstown has died.

The 30-year-old and two female family members were on a snowboarding trip when the avalanche hit.

The man was found behind the Greengates Chair area just after 7pm on Sunday - more than two and a half hours after the avalanche.

He was given medical attention and was flown by helicopter to Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown, where he was pronounced dead.

The death is being referred to the Coroner and the man's details won't be released until next of kin have been notified.

The two female family members who raised the alarm are reportedly uninjured.

NZSki, which operates the Coronet Peak ski area, says the avalanche happened outside of its bounds.
