Students stocking up on tinned food as Undie 500 revs up for another trip

The Undie 500 car rally is going ahead again this year with the organisers saying it will become a charity drive.

Thirty people were arrested for disorder last year during an unofficial rally between Christchurch and Dunedin, after the Canterbury University Engineering Society cancelled the event.

The reinstated rally is planned for the weekend of 11 September.

The Engineering Society's president, Carl Shrimpton, says rally-goers will this year bring with them thousands of cans of non-perishable food to charities in the Dunedin area.

Mr Shrimpton says the date has been moved a few weeks back from its traditional position during the mid-semester break, to reduce the weekend's end-of-term feel.

And he says the organisers will enforce a Dunedin City Council street liquor ban by blocking students who disobey it from licenced properties in Christchurch upon their return.
