$82m boost for school sports

4:14 pm on 11 August 2009

Prime Minister John Key has announced a new government initiative that will see $82 million invested in school sports over the next four years.

The Kiwisport initiative will provide $45 million in direct funding to schools and $37 million to be invested in a regional partnership fund for initiatives to support sport for school-aged children.

It delivers on the National Party's pre-election commitment to get more children involved in sport by focusing on sporting dollars for schools and sports clubs.

The funds are being redirected from areas such as social marketing campaigns and websites across the Government's health, education, and sport and recreation portfolios.
