A High Court jury in Wellington has heard about a police search at the home of one of five people facing drugs charges, including importing methamphetamine.

The Crown says the drug importing was organised by inmates at Rimutaka Prison using cellphones smuggled into the jail.

Detective Luke Cameron told the court that late in 2007 he went to a house at which one of the accused, Shane Ellis, was living.

Mr Cameron said he searched the house and found 8 Telecom and 20 Vodafone recharge vouchers, along with pieces of paper containing what looked like financial calculations.

Detective Cameron said he found a snaplock bag containing white crystalline residue in a bedroom. There was also some kind of residue on a set of digital scales in a car at the property.

During cross-examination, he said residue on the scales was never tested and the scales were later destroyed.
