Government weighs pseudoephedrine ban

8:54 am on 18 August 2009

A ban on pseudoephedrine in over-the-counter cold and flu products is under consideration.

Prime Minister John Key has asked his chief science advisor Peter Gluckman to explore the possibility of removing pseudoephedrine from non-prescription medicines to forestall its use in the manufacture of the illegal drug methamphetamine, or P.

Mr Key says Dr Gluckman has presented a range of recommendations in his report.

He says he will release the report - and the Government's response - once a broader range of drug-related questions has been considered.
