Dairy owners fear liquor changes will threaten livelihood

Dairy shop owners say possible changes to government policy on liquor rules will critically damage their industry.

About 20 demonstrators were at Parliament on Tuesday to raise concerns about amendments to the Sale and Supply of Liquor and the Liquor Enforcement Bill, which would prevent them from selling alcohol.

The president of the Association of Dairy, Grocery and Small Business, Neil Patel, says dairies are being unfairly treated.

Part of the proposed changes would prevent alcohol being sold in stores with a floor area less than 150 square metres.

Mr Patel says this suggest dairies will miss out on liquor licences, as they will instead be awarded to large businesses such as supermarkets.

The bill is currently before Parliament's Justice Select Committee and will be considered along with a Law Commission report on liquor.
