Governor-General Anand Satyanand has announced a popular youth programme will be renamed in honour of adventurer Sir Edmund Hillary.

The Young New Zealander's Challenge will now be called The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award.

It is one of several programmes available under the international Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme.

Thousands of New Zealanders aged between 14 and 25 sign up to the scheme every year, completing tasks that include community work and outdoor adventures.
