Former Prime Minister Helen Clark has made the annual Forbes list of the world's 100 most powerful women.

Helen Clark, now chair of the United Nations Development Group, was ranked the 60th most powerful woman. Last year, when still Prime Minister, Miss Clark was ranked 56th.

Rankings are determined by visibility in the media and the size of the organisation or country the woman leads.

German chancellor Angela Merkel topped the list for a fourth year in a row.

The United States president's wife, Michelle Obama, comes onto the list as the 40th most powerful woman.

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey, at 41st place, outranks Queen Elizabeth who is placed 42nd.
