New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has became only the eighth player in the history of Test cricket to achieve the double of 3,000 runs and 300 wickets during the second Test against Sri Lanka.

Vettori, who has scored 3,329 runs, claimed his 300th wicket when he had Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara caught at mid-wicket in the afternoon session of the first day's play on Wednesday.

Vettori joined an illustrious list of players when completed the double in his 94th Test, namely Richard Hadlee, Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, Shaun Pollock, Imran Khan, Shane Warne and Chaminda Vaas.
