Meteor shower sighted over NZ

3:19 pm on 28 August 2009

A large meteor trail was seen across New Zealand on Friday morning.

Police and Canterbury University's Mt John Observatory at Tekapo say sightings were reported from Rotorua to Timaru just after 6am on Friday.

Observatory superintendent Alan Gilmore says the reports are of a "very bright shower of lights ending with a bright flash".

He says there at least half a dozen meteor showers a year, which burn up 100km up into the atmosphere and so are seen over a wide area.
