Five people have been jailed for 14 months to eight years for the manslaughter of a Napier man killed in a street brawl between Maoris and Aborigines in Perth.

Everett James Tyson, Giles Lawrence Tyson and three teenagers, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 18-year-old Jon Teotinga Warena.

They also pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to Charleston Ngaha, 25, who was badly injured in the same brawl in the suburb of Lockridge in November 2007.

Justice McKechnie said Mr Warena was effectively beaten to death by the group, which was retaliating against an attack on a home by a Maori group of about eight men.

The judge said they had set out to injure Mr Warena and Mr Ngaha in the worst way.
