The rate of hospitalisations from close contact infectious diseases in New Zealand has doubled in the past 20 years.

Otago University researcher Michael Baker told a Public Health Association conference in Dunedin on Thursday that Maori and Pacific people are twice as likely as Pakeha New Zealanders to be affected.

Dr Baker said the risk of transmission increases markedly for those living in crowded households.
