Supermarkets drop bag levy in Auckland

10:29 am on 4 September 2009

Foodstuffs supermarkets in Auckland are dropping charges for plastic bags, while those in the South Island are keeping them.

New World and Four Square in Wellington were the first to drop the levy of 5 cents per bag, after what Foodstuffs says was feedback from customers.

From Friday, New World and Four Square stores in Auckland are removing the charge, with a regional spokesperson saying they are listening to what people want.

However, New World supermarkets in the South Island will keep charging customers. Foodstuffs says it's had huge support there.

Because of the bag levy, the company will give $50,000 to five environmental projects. On-going support is envisaged.
