$2m upgrade for facilities at Treaty grounds

The Waitangi National Trust is embarking on a $2 million makeover of visitor facilities at the Treaty grounds.

But it has abandoned a plan for a new conference and visitor centre.

Trust chairman Jeremy Williams says that's partly because of objections from groups including the Historic Places Trust, but finances were the main concern.

He says the trust has broken the project down into a series of smaller ones, starting with a new ticketing office, pathways and toilet block.

The trust will also build an education centre at Waitangi in future.
