Two Bulgarian men have been charged over an ATM card skimming operation.

Police say the men, aged 21 and 24, used a device to obtain information from at least 11 cash machines in Canterbury and Nelson.

The device can obtain personal banking data from customers' cards.

The accused were arrested at a Nelson motel on Thursday.

They appeared briefly in Nelson District Court on Friday and were remanded in custody to appear in Christchurch District Court on Monday.

Card holders affected will be contacted by their banks.
