Drive towards digital TV

7:53 am on 11 September 2009

Pay TV companies are pushing customers to move from analogue to digital services, as cut-off dates loom for the analogue network.

Sky TV plans to switch off analogue services in March next year. TelstraClear is switching off in 18 months.

TelstraClear says manufacturers are no longer making analogue componentry.

Both pay TV companies are offering to switch customers to digital television for free.

Freeview also says pick-up for digital tv is also accelerating as new television sets enable customers to access digital services by simply plugging them in.

General manager Sam Irvine says Freeview now reaches 15% of the population.
