The New Zealand Defence Force says recruitment levels are at a 10-year high, while the number of people choosing to leave the armed forces is at a 10-year low.

The annual report of the New Zealand Defence force, released on Thursday, shows the number of regular, reserve and civilian personnel has grown across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Defence Force chief Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae says overseas deployment is proving attractive to recruits and tighter economic conditions at home are pushing more people into the armed forces.

Lieutenant General Mateparae says the improvement in staff retention is in part due to policies adopted in 2008, which give Defence staff pay parity with equivalent professions in the wider community.
