A survey has found slightly more New Zealanders support the MMP electoral system than oppose it, but neither side is in a majority.
The Government has pledged to hold a referendum on the Mixed Member Proportional system, in line with an election commitment.
The Research New Zealand polling company sought the opinions of 500 people. It found 45% support MMP and 42% oppose it. Another 13% said they were unsure.
Younger people were generally more supportive of MMP than older respondents.
Prime Minister John Key has said in the past that he does not believe there's a mood for change.
But Research New Zealand's director, Emanuel Kalafatelis, says the poll shows the MMP debate remains wide open.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5%.
