Van used to cross Cook Strait sells at auction

3:06 pm on 15 September 2009

An amphibious van which two men drove across Cook Strait has been sold for $9100 in an internet auction.

The 1990 four wheel drive was converted for the 6 September crossing by Dan Melling and Adam Turnbull, who have spent the past week answering hundreds of questions on the TradeMe website.

Some bidders asked whether the van, named Roofliss, would make it to Great Barrier Island or across Foveaux Strait.

Others asked about its ability to handle waves, what protection it has against rust, or pirates, and whether it could be converted to run on beer.

More than 67,000 viewed the auction before it sold to a bidder from Blenheim.
