February inquest into gorge tragedy

4:18 pm on 17 September 2009

The coroner's inquest into the deaths of six students and a teacher swept away in the Mangatepopo Gorge last year will be held early next year.

The group, from Elim Christian College in Auckland, was killed during a canyoning trip at the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre.

The centre has already been ordered to pay nearly half a million dollars in reparation and fines for failing to ensure the safety of the group. The police have decided not to lay criminal charges.

Hastings regional coroner Chris Devonport will hold the inquest in Auckland in February.
