An Auckland father of eight has been jailed for assaulting and neglecting his children.
The 37-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at the High Court to two years and nine months in prison.
The man pleaded guilty in August to five charges, including assault with a weapon and cruelty to a child, after the Crown abandoned a trial against him in which he was originally accused of selling his daughter for sexual purposes.
The trial was abandoned when the man's eldest daughter admitted that she'd lied when she said her father let three men sexually assault her in return for $40.
In sentencing, Justice Venning told the man he was an appallingly bad father.
