Only one-third of night classes seek to stay open

Funding cuts to adult education have left less than a third of schools trying to stay open.

Government data on the number of schools that have applied to continue running night classes follows an 80% reduction in their funding.

The Community Learning Association says the figures confirm its fears for the future of night classes.

The association, which represents more than 200 schools offering night classes, says a third of them have already opted out.

It says the only way for the rest to continue is by offering a user-pays service, but many see that as too great a financial risk.
