Student event not wanted anywhere

South Island police have welcomed the cancellation of the Undie 500 drive to Dunedin and say they don't want to see it going to other centres, either.

The cancellation follows trouble on Dunedin's Castle Street during the annual event at the weekend, with nearly 70 people arrested.

The Engineering Society at Canterbury University says it is planning an alternative route, but it is too early to say which direction it will take.

Police Inspector Dave Campbell says he does not want to see an event that would involve students even driving through Dunedin.

Superintendent Gary Knowles is also warning the students away from the Tasman area. He says anyone involved in an alternative rally would be prevented from driving through Marlborough, Nelson, or along the West Coast.
