The worker who died after slabs of granite fell on him in Motueka has been named. He was Raymond Hibbs, 55, of Motueka.

The fatal accident occurred shortly before 8am on Saturday as Mr Hibbs was unloading the slabs from the deck of a truck at Quaystone Ltd, a signage and stonemasonry company where he worked.

Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews of the local police says he would have died instantly under the weight of the slabs.

The Department of Labour and the police are investigating the accident. Quaystone Ltd declined to comment.
