Tough times reported for students

5:27 am on 20 September 2009

Student associations say students are facing tough times: requests for hardship grants and food have almost doubled this year.

Otago Polytechnic Students Association says there has been an increase of 40% in requests for grants and food packages.

President Meegan Cloughley believes an increase in living costs and a lack of jobs are responsible.

The national union of student associations says the same situation is being seen around New Zealand.
